Punctuation

 

Punctuation helps us to understand what is written. It allows the reader to pause or stop while reading. Punctuation marks are the symbols that make the written language easy to read and understand. The most common punctuations in English are :- capital letter ; comma ; full stop ; question mark ; exclamation mark ; apostrophe ; single inverted commas ; double inverted commas ; colon ; semi colon ; hyphen ; dash.

 

Example :-

  1. She is a teacher.

  2. Raj, Rahul and Priyanka are playing cards.

  3. The players shouted, " Hurrah! We won the match."

  4. What is your name?

  5. She is very good - looking.

Punctuation Marks

Capitalization  :-We start the first letter of a sentence with capital letter. We use capital letter for proper nouns. The word I and God is always written in capital letter.

 

For example :-

  1. My mother is an excellent cook.

  2. Raj called me from Delhi to attend Onam festival that is  celebrated in the month of January.

  3. I should go home now.

  4. May God bless you.

Full Stop( . )  :-We use full stop always at the end of the sentence. It is also used to write abbreviation.

 

For example :-

  1. He is an engineer.

  2. My father is a doctor.

  3. Master of Arts :- M.A.

Comma( , )  :-We use comma for short pause, to separate items in a list and to separate adjectives.

 

For example :-

  1. He came home, had lunch and went for tution.

  2. My mother bought apples, bananas and oranges from the market.

  3. In village we usually see long, narrow path.

Question Mark( ? )  :-We use question mark always at the end of the sentence.

  1. Where are you going?

  2. Do you have my book?

  3. Are they going to play?

  4. Have you seen my bag?

Exclamation Mark( ! )  :-We use exclamation mark to show the extreme feelings like surprise, joy, anger, irritation, unhappiness etc.

 

For example :-

  1. Bravo! you played very well.

  2. Have a nice day!

  3. Alas! he is dead.

  4. Gosh! They lost the game.

Apostrophe(')  :-We use apostrophe to show the possession or ownership of a noun. If the noun is singular the apostrophe is used with s as ('s) and if the noun is plural the apostrophe is used as(') because plural noun ends with s/es. If plural noun doesn't end with s/es apostrophe is used as ('s). 

We use apostrophe to shorten the words by omitting a letter /some letters.

 

For example :-

  1. This is my uncle's car.

  2. The girls' dance will start after one hour.

  3. The women's restroom is near the cafeteria.

 

We can shorten words by omitting a letter/some letters using a apostrophe.

 

For example :-

  1. I did not complete my work.  -   I didn't complete my work.

  2. My friend was not at home.   -   My friend wasn't at home.

Single inverted commas( '-' )  :-We use single inverted commas to indicate the tile of the story/poem.

 

For example :-

  1. My younger brother is watching 'Tom and Jerry'.

  2. She has learnt the poem 'Jack and Jill'.

Double inverted commas("--" )  :-We use double inverted commas to refer the exact dialogue of the speaker.

  1. Our teacher said ," I will teach you division today".

  2. The player said, " Hurrah! We won the match".
