Prepositions

A preposition is a word that connects a noun or pronoun to another noun or pronoun. It tells us the position of a noun or pronoun. It tells us where a person, place , animal or thing is.

Example :- The cup is on the table.

                      The cat is under the table.

Types of Prepositions

Preposition of place :-Preposition of place tells us the position of a noun or pronoun in relation to another noun or pronoun.

List of preposition of place- 

For example :-

  1. The books are in the bag.

  2. The pen is on the table.

  3. Mumbai is in Maharashtra state.

  4. The bird is in the nest.

Preposition of Time :-Preposition of time tells us about the specific time period such as date of a calendar , a day of a week or actual time.

List of preposition of time- at, in, on.

For example :-

  1. My friends will come on my birthday.

  2. We usually have dinner at  9 o'clock.

  3. My birthday comes in the month of December.

  4. Our match is on Sunday.

Preposition of Movement :-Preposition of movement tells us the movement of a noun or pronoun from one place to another.

List of preposition of movement- through, towards, to,  into, along, across, over, up, down, from, around etc.

For example :-

  1. He went to the mall for shopping.

  2. She turned her face towards him.

  3. He walked slowly through the woods.

  4. They walked along the beach.

Compound Prepositions :- Compound preposition are the words that link a noun/pronoun to another noun/pronoun. They are made of two or more words. They can also be as one word also.

List of compound preposition :- on account of, instead of, out of, due to, because of, at the time of, apart from, by way of, for lack of, as compared to, for the sake of etc.

For example :-

  1. They faught  together instead of studying.

  2. Because of his kind nature his neighbour praise him.

  3. She sat between the kids.

  4. He can't sing any more on account of his falling health.
