Active & Passive Voice

 

Voice is a form of verb, it indicates the relationship between the action and the subject. It tells us whether the subject does the action or the subject receives the action. The voice of the sentence may change in the sentence but the meaning of the sentence does not change.

EXAMPLES OF VOICE

 Active Voice

 The active voice indicates that the subject is the doer of the action. It means when the subject is doing the action the verb is in active voice.

​

For example :- 

  1. He  is writing a story.

  2. My mother cooks food .

  3. Tom is watching a movie.

  4.  I will call you in the evening.

 Passive Voice

The passive voice indicates that the subject is the receiver of the action. It means when the subject is receiving the action the verb is in passive voice.

For example :-

  1. A story is written by him.

  2. Food is cooked by my mother.

  3. A movie is watched by Tom.

  4. You will be called by me in the evening.

Rules to change Active Voice to Passive Voice

  • The object of the verb becomes the subject of the verb in passive voice.

  • The subject of the verb becomes the object in the passive voice and is preceded by the preposition 'by'.​

  • The verb changes to be form and the subject changes to the past participle form (3rd form) of verb.

  • Personal pronouns change their form and become object pronouns.

An apple was eaten by him.

  • In negative sentences we usually place not before the past participle(3rd form of verb) form of the verb.

I don't like tea.

She will not give the exam.

They didn't do homework.

Tom didn,t play cricket.

Tea is not liked by me..

The Exam will not be given by her.

Homework was not done by them.

Cricket was not played by Tom.
